HHS Visioning Parent and Community Forum
As an action from the 2019 External School Review, Huonville High School was tasked with creating a new vision statement that would guide and inform our practices over the next few years. In late 2019 we started this process with an end goal being the launch of the 2020 HHS Vision.
With the interruption of COVID-19 creating limitations on how we could conduct forums, this was subsequently put on hold until we were sure we could engage in face to face sessions, COVID-19 conditions being taken into account.
In establishing our futures or vision statement, it is critical to hear the voice of not only parents but the broader Huon community. We will also work with our students to gain their input. HHS is a significant provider of education for young people in the Huon Valley and what we do impacts upon the future of the region. One of the advantages we have as a school community, is that we are big enough to offer a range of opportunities and learning experiences for the young people of the Huon, but significantly, we are small enough to really know our learners, their needs and their families.
As the main public provider for Huon Valley students, our commitment is that we will provide the optimum learning for all, without compromise. Our focus is to provide learning that isn’t just good enough, but that every learner leaves having had opportunities to become the best they possibly can be, that their literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge have set them up for their futures. Through this, we are also preparing them to be worthwhile members of the community, who contribute to the well-being of the Huon Valley, as well as its social and economic viability.
We can’t do this alone, hence the importance of involving the wider community. Through understanding each of our roles within this community, we will then be able to articulate what this school needs to be, to improve the future of the region.
Thank you to everyone who gave up their evening last night - your input will help the defining of a clear vision, and through that, a pathway to ensure the young people of the region are best prepared for life beyond school. As a roaming participant, it was exciting to hear the diverse range of thoughts from the 30 or so community members, thoughts that already have helped prioritise what we should focus on in developing our final statement. Particular thanks go to the facilitators led by Wendy Spencer and Kate Grady from the Department of Education, Mayor Bec Enders, Principal of Huonville Primary School, Ian Thomas, School Improvement, Leader Deb Day, and staff from the school itself.
“The world is moving at a tremendous rate; going no one knows where.
We must prepare our children, not for the world of the past, not for our world,
but for their world – the world of the future.”.
