Thanks to Our Assembly Organising Team
A big thank you to Mr. Dorrington and the assembly organising team for making our assemblies a highlight of the school term. With catchy personalized jingles and a touch of humour, they’ve turned these events into a fun and integral part of our school culture. Parents, you are warmly invited to join us for these celebrations. Assemblies are scheduled for Friday in Weeks 1, 5 and 10, and details can be found on our school calendar on the website and in the Schoolzine App.
Upcoming School Association Meeting
The School Association will meet again next week on Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in the Staff Room. This meeting is particularly special as we’ll be forming a committee to plan celebrations for our school's 85th anniversary next year. Your input and participation would be greatly appreciated.
Uniform Update
Congratulations to all students who are consistently adhering to our uniform policy and thank you to parents for supporting our high expectations in this area. We are excited to announce that long sleeve polo tops are now available from the office uniform supplies. They are a fantastic addition to our uniform range and perfect for staying warm during the colder weather.
Positive Feedback on Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Program
We are thrilled to share the fantastic feedback we’ve been receiving from our associate primary schools regarding this year’s Year 6 into Year 7 transition program. A huge appreciation goes out to our Assistant Principal, Clint Rottier, who has been tirelessly leading this initiative. His dedication is making a significant impact, and it’s wonderful to hear that primary students from across the valley have been thoroughly enjoying the taster experiences with our teachers this term. We look forward to more exciting activities next term.
We are also pleased to report that enrolments for Year 7 in 2024 are up, a true testament to the incredible work Mr. Rottier is doing. His efforts are clearly resonating with students and families, helping to create a smooth and welcoming transition to our school.
Grade 10/11/12 Transition Process in Full Swing
The Grade 10/11/12 transition process is also well underway, with students having completed their initial course selections. Our Year 11/12 enrolments are looking very strong for 2024, and we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our senior students.
Thank you to AP Clint Rottier for his leadership and everyone involved in these transition programs for ensuring our students feel supported and prepared for the next stages of their educational journey. Your hard work is greatly appreciated

Family School Satisfaction Survey 2024
The School Satisfaction Survey is now open!
Every year the Department for Education, Children and Young People conducts a School Satisfaction Survey to find out what your child(ren)'s school does well and where it may improve. Your feedback is very important to help us inform our school improvement planning and decision-making.
The survey opened Monday 26 August 2024 and is open until Friday 20 September 2024 and should take about 5 minutes to complete.
Each family should nominate one person to fill in this survey for their child(ren).
Take the online survey by clicking this Family School Satisfaction Survey 2024 (microsoft.com), or pasting it in your browser: https://nam.dcv.ms/NfOcfS4tNK
The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
All families in this school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any Department for Education, Children and Young People staff.
Please contact the school if you require any assistance. Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey.
From the Grade 7/8 Coordinator
Hello Parents and Carers
We are now over halfway through the term with holidays starting 30th September. You can expect some assessments in technologies, science and HASS (History/Geography) at the end of term. This will include a rubric to assess the work sample. This will be the same as you received for English and Maths last term.
The highly anticipated annual Athletics Carnival is just around the corner (Week 9, Friday) and the excitement is building! This year, the three houses—Hakea, Banksia and Grevillea—will compete in a thrilling showdown of athletic prowess and House spirit. From sprints and relays to high jumps and long-distance events, each house will strive to claim the coveted championship title. Students and staff alike are encouraged to come dressed in their house colours, ready to cheer on their teams with enthusiasm. It’s more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of teamwork, determination, and school pride. Let the best house win! Parents and carers are welcome to attend the carnival to be held at the Huonville Athletics Oval.
Crazy Sock Day was a lot of fun last week with a free Sausage Sizzle, and school musos providing entertainment. On Friday, 30th August, we're holding "Wear It Purple" day to celebrate diversity in our school. Students wishing to participate by wearing purple should bring a gold coin donation.
Also, another reminder to parents is that teachers are continuing to keep the ‘line’ around uniform. This means wearing navy or black pants. No jeans or grey trackies please. As per our school's Uniform Policy, shoes must have closed in toes, however Ugg boots must not be worn as they can be dangerous and slippery, particularly in the kitchen area.
The focus in homeroom this term is around community projects. We started big, looking at what being Australian is, narrowing down to our Huon Valley community—looking at sports clubs and the Tasmanian Fire Service, for example. Then we moved into our school community, exploring who we are as a school. The idea is then to explore some projects as a class that might support a community, for example, crocheting hats for those in need, or a fundraiser for new sporting equipment. We’ll keep you posted on how that all pans out.
Again, please feel free to contact myself or Riley Mislov if you have any questions.
Regards
Jason Lunden
Acting AST and Grade Coordinator
What's Happening in Hospitality Classes?
Huon Aquaculture were kind enough to visit our school recently, showing how chefs process whole salmon. Of course they brought some great products along to try, and the students did a great job getting involved.

From the Grade Coordinator 9/10
This term has been packed with exciting excursion opportunities for our students! Highlights include the intense Basketball Rivals excursion and the RecLink Netball Tournament, where our teams excelled.
Huonville High School triumphed in a thrilling basketball tournament against Kingston High School! Our team showcased incredible skill and teamwork, securing a well-deserved victory. This win reflects the dedication and hard work of our players and coaches. Congratulations to everyone involved—Huonville pride is stronger than ever!
Our Year 9/10 boys participated in the RecLink Boys Netball Tournament and had an impressive performance, winning 3 out of 5 games! Their determination and teamwork shone through, earning them well-deserved victories. Congratulations to the team for representing our school with pride and showcasing their talent on the court!
Students also enjoyed enriching cultural experiences with The Box and Stranger Sings performances, sparking creativity and discussion. Additionally, a hospitality expo excursion provided valuable industry insights for those interested in the culinary arts.
The two classes of Grade 9/10 Hospitality had a great turnout for our excursion to The Grand Chancellor and Drysdale TAFE. In the hotel we had a tour of the kitchens and rooms in the hotel. We learned a bit about housekeeping and had a brief tour of the pool. Thankfully, no one got wet. After a quick break we got into the four activities at Drysdale. This included making mocktails, carrying numerous plates and cups, making dumplings and a new one for me, VR. The students put on the virtual reality glasses, putting them into a bar situation where they had to put down a napkin, place a glass in the right spot, add ice and then mix a margarita. Amazing times we live in. Don’t worry, it was not real enough to drink.
I think the students got a lot out of the day, discovering all the possibilities that hospitality has to offer.
These experiences have broadened our students' horizons and created lasting memories.
Congratulations to our newly appointed House Captains from Year 10! These outstanding students will lead Hakea, Banksia and Grevillia Houses, inspiring their peers in upcoming events. Their leadership, dedication, and school spirit have earned them this honour. We look forward to seeing their impact throughout the school year!
- Banksia – Noah Phillips & Will Churchill
- Grevillia – Jackson Cowmeadow & Mia Thorpe
- Hakea – Ollie Otto & Oscar Wynter

On the 1st of August a small group of year 9 and 10 students travelled to the TasTAFE Clarence Campus Clarence Campus | TasTAFE
Students listened to industry experts from Master Builders, Fairbrother, Howrah Plumbing, and Degree C on what companies are looking for in their potential apprentices and the best way to get noticed in applications.
In the afternoon students toured the facilities looking at glazing, construction, bricklaying, plastering, painting and electrical and plumbing.
The facilities were incredible, and students left with a better understanding of how to network and gain work experience in their areas of interest.
“I enjoyed the taster day. It was a great experience, and I would love to do more things like it.” Jacob
“I enjoyed the trade centre excursion because they gave us a lot of information about how to set up your future and all of the trades they have on offer at TAFE. I especially liked the plumbing and electro technology facility because it was a lot more advanced than I thought it would be.” Ollie
If students would like more information about their transition into Year 11 please contact Ari Powell (AST yr11/12) or Clint Rottier (Assistant Principal Yr11/12)

Imagine my pleasant surprise when I discovered that the Cert II Hospitality class were doing a unit on making mocktails!
Students proudly mixed up fabulously fruity drinks with delicious sugar edges and gorgeous garnishes.
Any adult lucky enough to be in the Trade Training Centre was supplied with one or 3 mocktails to taste test.
10 out of 10 would recommend!
