This year we broke with past practice and held our Year 7-10 Presentation Assembly outside normal school hours.
This was in response to parent and community feedback as the afternoon event has often clashed with our feeder schools. Also, by holding it at this time, we were anticipating that more parents/carers, family and community members would be able to attend, to help celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students, as well as developing a more aspirational community culture through understanding and appreciating the breadth and depth of the learning opportunities in the Huon region.
As a result, the Primary School’s Multi-Purpose Room was packed out with people there to celebrate student achievement. Thanks to all and what a great feeling for everyone involved!
This year, as every year, we have some staff who are leaving. We acknowledged some of them with the students in a whole school assembly on Wednesday, and will have our final farewells on Friday with staff.
I wish the best for:
- Holly Johnston, taking maternity leave
- Joe Stanny, who is retiring
- Patrick Watts, who will be taking an overseas adventure with his partner through 2020
- Dane Colbeck – AST at New Town High School and
- Therese Barnett – transferring to Devonport HS where she will be able to use her knowledge and experience in building up their 11/12 program.
I would also like to acknowledge the members of the School Association; for their passion for the school, their support and advice and for providing a considered voice for the members of the school community.
Finally, these events would not be possible without the tireless work of dedicated staff, in this case Steph Semmens, Caroline Stansfield and Rachael Stewart, who between them have put in many hours of labour. Thank you.
Our appreciation also goes to everyone who has provided an award or a donation that could be put towards an award. As a case in point, the Year 10 Dux award was funded through donations. Your generosity is reflective of the changing attitudes and the understood value of a strong education culture in the Huon Valley.
Congratulations to all award winners as these awards are not given lightly.
Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a restful break. We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2020.
Geoff Williamson
Congratulations to all of our award winners!
And a big thank you to all those who made the evening a great success, including donors, presenters, and family and friends who attended the presentation evening.
Australian Navy Cadets Tasmania
The Australian Navy Cadets propose to open a new unit in Kingston In March 2020. We are now seeking potential Cadets to form the first intake for this unit.
A meeting to gather support will be held at Kingston High School, 7pm on Thursday, 13th February, 2020.
Cadets need to be turning 13 years of age in 2020, or be older. The maximum age we are hoping to recruit is 16 years of age to enable the cadet to have a full cadet experience before they turn 18 years old, however we will take teens up to 17 years of age.
This could be a great opportunity for your child entering year 7 to maintain friendships with friends going to different high schools.
We will also be looking to recruit uniformed and volunteer staff, support teams and other community support.
The unit will parade at Kingston High School, on Friday nights 1830hrs (6:30pm) to 2130hrs (9:30pm) and about once a month will hold a weekend posting at Anglesea Barracks from 1830hrs (6:30pm) Friday to 1500hrs (3:00pm) Sunday. During the weekend they will participate in maritime activities, seamanship, housekeeping and other adventurous activities.
